Safety plus for e-bikes with Bosch Smart Systems

Bosch eBike Systems wants to make parking e-bikes as safe as possible. To this end, the Swabians have implemented a number of functions in the Bosch Smart system that make it more difficult to steal the bike. At the same time, it should be easier to find the bike after it has been stolen.

The core of the security feature consists of an immobilizer, bike tracking, and a theft alarm. The mechanical protection provided by a conventional bicycle lock is thus digitally enhanced.

Claus Fleischer, Managing Director of Bosch eBike Systems, believes that anyone who decides to buy an eBike should be able to enjoy it for a long time. “We are now providing even more security with the technology of the smart system.

Thanks to the new eBike Alarm function, users can park their e-bikes more easily. ” Users can use the associated “eBike Flow App” to find out about the status of their bikes.

Bosch Smart System: e-bike alarm with app control

The e-bike alarm of the Bosch Smart System can be activated via the “eBike Flow App”. If there is a GPS connection, the alarm is always active when the e-bike is switched off. The bike can be locked and unlocked via smartphone. In the app, users can see the location and security status of their e-bike at any time. A small side effect is that the bike can also be easily found in large bicycle parking areas.

How the alarm works: If the Bosch Smart system detects that someone is tampering with the bike, a two-stage alarm is triggered. Thanks to its motion sensors, the system distinguishes whether the bike is being moved heavily or only slightly.

In the event of slight movements, the alarm module of the Bosch Smart System emits several short warning tones as a deterrent. If the e-bike is moved more vigorously or even carried away without the appropriate digital key on your smartphone being nearby, the system will sound the alarm. The environment is then alerted to the attempted theft with a clearly perceptible alarm tone. The owner is also alerted by a notification on his cell phone.

Bosch Smart System: Automatic tracking after a theft

If the loud alarm does not deter a thief, stage two of the Bosch Smart System is activated: the e-bike alarm notifies the owner and starts tracking at the same time. The location of the bike is thus recorded and automatically sent to the “eBike Flow App”.

The owner can then transmit this data to the police. According to Bosch, this is particularly important in the first two hours after the theft. This increases the chance of finding the bike with the help of the police enormously. The app also gives specific tips to the bike owner on how to behave in the event of theft.

In order to be able to use the alarm in the best possible way, eBike Lock must be activated in the “eBike Flow App”. The bike must also have the Bosch Connect module on board. An example of this is the brand new Canyon Pathlite. ON 9.

The chargeable component is either already installed at the factory, as is the case with the Canyon, or it is retrofitted by specialist dealers. The module is installed invisibly on the e-bike. It contains a radio and a GPS module, its own battery, and various sensors. Only with this module on board can the e-bike alarm of the Bosch Smart system be used.

Bosch Smart-System: additional feature free of charge for twelve months

Users of the Connect module within the Bosch Smart system receive the e-bike alarm free of charge for twelve months. After that, there are no automatic fees. The user decides for himself whether he wants to continue using the system. If so, it costs 4.99 euros per month or 39.99 euros per year.

The Connect module is available from specialist retailers, and the e-bike alarm is part of the Bosch Smart system in the eBike Flow app. The app is available free of charge for Android and Apple OS.

Immobilizer in the smart system

The third and simplest anti-theft feature is the immobilizer. If the e-bike user decouples his bike computer from the Bosch Smart system, the energy supply to the motor is automatically blocked. It is only reactivated when the appropriate display is attached.

With the new Kiox, for example, not just any Kiox fits; it has to be the display familiar from the bike. This is the only way to start the e-bike system. Without a suitable display, the bicycle cannot be used as an e-bike and is therefore worthless to the thief.
